FAQs
How many gels should I take per hour?
Simply 1 Gel 30 every 30 minutes, followed by water. Individual needs depend on what you're doing:
- Team sports (like AFL): 1 to 2 gels an hour covers most needs
- Recreational endurance (running, cycling): 2 to 3 gels an hour is the sweet spot
- Elite endurance athletes: up to 3 to 4 gels an hour, this is where our dual-carb formula really pulls its weight
Why is the ratio 1:0.8 glucose to fructose, and not 2:1 like most other gels?
Your gut has two "doors" for absorbing carbs during exercise, one for glucose, one for fructose. Most gels only use one, so they're stuck with a single door and a lower ceiling. Gel 30 uses both, close to an even ratio, so both doors are working at once instead of one being overloaded while the other sits idle. That lifts your total absorption to around 90g an hour. The result: more of what you take in actually gets absorbed, and less sits in your gut causing bloating or discomfort.
Why does it use maltodextrin instead of cluster dextrin (HBCD)?
Cluster dextrin gets marketed as "faster absorbing," but that's only true when you're resting. Once you're actually exercising, that advantage disappears; studies have found no real difference between the two, and in some cases maltodextrin performed better, with 67% oxidation efficiency compared to 51% for cluster dextrin, plus less nausea. So Gel 30 uses maltodextrin: same performance during training and racing, easier on your gut, and it costs less too.
What does the pectin actually do?
Pectin does three things. It thickens the gel without pulling extra water into your gut (unlike using more carbs to thicken it). It slows things down slightly so the carbs release steadily instead of all at once. And it forms a protective coating over your gut wall, which matters most during hard efforts when your gut is more vulnerable. Net result: less stickiness, less gut stress, more consistent fuelling.
I've had stomach issues with other gels. Will Gel 30 be different?
Likely yes. Most gels are quite concentrated, which pulls water into your gut and can cause discomfort. Gel 30 is much less concentrated, so there's far less of that effect, even during hard efforts (you should still chase it with water). Combined with the pectin protection and a measured sodium dose, it's built to be gentler on your gut. Everyone's different though, so it's always worth training your gut to handle fuelling during exercise.
Does it contain caffeine?
No. Gel 30 is completely caffeine free, across every flavour. That means you can manage your own caffeine separately, without it clashing with your fuelling.
Can I use it for sports other than running and triathlon?
Definitely. Gel 30 was built with team sport in mind just as much as endurance. For AFL, rugby, football and similar sports, being gentle on your gut matters even more, since high-intensity, stop-start efforts already put your gut under stress. A good starting point for team sport athletes is one gel per quarter or half.
